Japan's GTO drama casts 28 new teen actors for 2026 series

The upcoming 2026 television adaptation of the manga GTO will launch on July 20 on Kansai TV and Fuji TV. Veteran actor Takahiro Sorimachi (反町隆史) returns as the iconic teacher Odagiri, this time leading a class of first‑year students at the fictional Seishin Academy.

A nationwide audition limited to real high‑school‑age youths (15‑17) attracted over 400 candidates. After multiple selection rounds, 28 young actors were chosen to portray the students of class 1‑B. The cast includes newcomers such as Inagaki Raisen, Ikawa Momori, Oshima Miyu, Kajihara Kana, Kawaguchi Kazuki, Kitazato Ryu, Shibasaki Fuuma, Nanba Aoi (LIL LEAGUE) and Nishihara Kokona (The Right Light), among others. Directors emphasize that the actors' own personalities were a key factor in casting, aiming for authentic teenage representation.

The series revives the 1998 hit, which achieved record‑high ratings, and follows the 2024 GTO Revival special that also drew strong viewership. The new drama is positioned to address contemporary school issues and generational gaps while preserving the original’s rebellious spirit.
