Japan's gut‑health market expands with probiotic soups and functional yogurts

A surge in gut‑health (腸活) products is unfolding in Japan, driven by experts such as Jun Kumazawa and Prof. Yuji Naito who advocate fiber‑rich soups, prebiotic oligosaccharide seasonings and protein‑based snacks to boost intestinal motility and overall well‑being. New offerings include natural‑recipe protein soup delivering three probiotics per serving, inulin‑rich reset soups, fiber‑infused drinks and snack bars.

The yogurt sector is also innovating, with multiple brands launching functional varieties that claim benefits for blood pressure, blood‑sugar control, fat metabolism and gut microbiota. Notable examples are Meiji’s HbA1c‑targeted yogurt with MI‑2 lactobacillus, Morinaga’s triple‑yogurt containing peptide MKP, Ezaki Glico’s BifiX yogurt paired with inulin, and Danone’s fat‑burning yogurt featuring ARLOSE and the BE80 strain. New packaging formats such as pouch and spout designs aim to increase convenience. Recommended daily intake is 150–300 g, with users advised to monitor bowel regularity.
