The World Bank’s 2026 World Development Report, titled “The Promise of Artificial Intelligence,” says artificial intelligence could raise productivity in 16.2 % of jobs across developing economies, a figure close to the 18.7 % projected for high‑income countries. The report also finds that only 4.5 % of jobs in low‑ and middle‑income economies face automation risk, compared with 14.2 % in richer nations.

World Bank chief economist Indermit Gill called AI a “lifeline” for emerging economies, stressing that they do not need costly large‑scale data centres or bespoke large language models. He urged governments to close gaps in electricity supply, broadband connectivity and digital skills so that affordable AI tools can improve health care, education, judicial services and agricultural extension for millions of people.

The report warns that without proper regulation AI could widen income inequality, concentrate economic power and threaten rights, social cohesion and public trust. It calls for voluntary sector standards and, where needed, enforcement of existing laws to mitigate these risks.
