Japan's Kumamoto quake spares Vietnamese and Fijian nationals, embassies report

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan on 28 July 2026, causing extensive loss of life, hundreds of injuries, widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, and displacing thousands of residents.

The Vietnamese consulate in Fukuoka confirmed that no Vietnamese citizens were harmed and is coordinating consular assistance for any needed support. Fiji’s embassy in Tokyo also reported that no Fijian nationals were directly affected. Fiji’s foreign minister, Sakiasi Ditoka, expressed condolences to Japanese families, pledged solidarity, and said he will write to Japan’s foreign minister to convey Fiji’s sympathy and support.

Both governments are monitoring the situation and cooperating with Japanese authorities in the ongoing emergency response.
