Japan's longevity tied to diet, daily activity and purpose‑driven living

Japan consistently ranks among the world’s nations with the highest life expectancy. Researchers studying the island of Okinawa, known for its many centenarians, attribute this longevity to a combination of factors rather than a single secret.

Key elements include a traditional diet rich in omega‑3‑laden fish, seaweed, seasonal vegetables, green tea and fermented foods such as natto and miso, combined with moderate portion sizes (the Hara Hachi Bu practice of stopping when about 80 % full). Daily low‑intensity movement—walking, gardening, biking, household chores and simple exercises like Radio Taiso—keeps bodies flexible without high‑impact strain. A strong sense of purpose, known as ikigai, and tight community ties further reduce stress and support heart health. Experts say genetics also play a role, but the sustained lifestyle across generations is a major contributor to Japan’s healthy ageing.
