Japan's MLIT targets construction productivity and work-style reform

Ken Matsumoto, Technical Affairs Deputy Director of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, has outlined strategies to balance diverse working styles with increased productivity in the construction industry.

To address challenges such as extreme heat and regional differences in construction conditions, the ministry aims to expand options for workers. This includes avoiding work during peak heat hours and utilizing digital technologies like AI to improve efficiency. The ministry intends to lead in digital transformation (DX) and i-Construction 2.0 through direct projects while supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in adopting ICT and data integration.

Regarding fiscal matters, the ministry is working to secure public works budgets for the 2027 fiscal year that account for rising material and labor costs. Matsumoto emphasized the importance of collaboration with the industry to ensure smooth budget execution and to address issues such as the leveling of construction schedules.
