Japan's mothers seek air‑conditioned rental spaces as summer heat curtails children's outings

A survey by the rental‑space platform Space Market of mothers who have used its service found that 86.3% of them cancelled or altered summer‑time outings because of extreme heat. When asked about preferred indoor play venues, 62.4% chose paid indoor playgrounds, 59.8% chose mall kids’ spaces and 52.1% chose community children’s centers, but the most valued feature was air‑conditioning (40.2%). Overall, 94.9% expressed strong interest in renting private, air‑conditioned spaces for children’s play.

An accompanying commentary highlights a broader "experience gap" among Japanese children during summer vacation: 41% report not playing with friends and 51% spend the break at home alone. The piece attributes this to reduced free play spaces, higher costs, and the need for parental supervision, pointing to growing social inequities in children's summer experiences.
