Japan's Okinawa reefs face bleaching crisis, scientists test heatwave simulators
Coral reefs around Japan's southern Okinawa islands were devastated by a marine heatwave in 2024, creating large‑scale bleaching and turning vibrant reefs into pale “graveyards”. The region, which relies on tourism for more than 80 % of its economy, now confronts the risk of another mass bleaching event in 2026 as global ocean temperatures climb and a strong El Niño is forecast.
Timothy Ravasi, a professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, leads a laboratory that operates one of only two heat‑wave simulators in the world. In rows of temperature‑controlled tanks, scientists expose coral, giant clams and clownfish to varied temperature and pH levels, deliberately inducing bleaching to study how the organisms adapt. The research aims to improve understanding of climate‑driven ocean warming and acidification and to develop strategies for reef restoration.
Ravasi warns that without urgent action, “it’s almost 100 % certain that soon, not just in Okinawa but worldwide, we will face another massive bleaching event.” He calls for government, stakeholders and the tourism industry to reduce development pressure and adopt stronger climate policies, noting that recent typhoons have temporarily cooled the surrounding sea water.
