Japan's PM Takaichi requests Apple implement AI suicide prevention features

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has requested that Apple implement suicide prevention features and safety measures within its device-integrated generative AI systems. The request follows concerns regarding the increasing number of children and young people using AI for mental health consultations, as well as international reports of tragic incidents where AI interactions were linked to self-harm or suicide.

In response to the Prime Minister, Apple executives, including former CEO Tim Cook and CEO John Ternus, expressed a willingness to cooperate with the Japanese government. Apple indicated it is working on initiatives to connect users experiencing serious distress to local support services and is committed to strengthening safety measures for children online.

The Japanese government aims to collaborate with global technology companies to ensure a safe internet environment, focusing on integrating safety nets into rapidly evolving AI technologies to protect the mental health of young users.
