Japan PM Sanae Takaichi’s approval rating hits lowest level amid inflation and yen slump
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s cabinet approval rating fell to 57 % in July, down from 69 % in June – the first time it has dropped below 60 % since she took office. Disapproval rose to 34 % and 71 % of surveyed citizens said they were dissatisfied with the government’s handling of rising living costs.
The slide follows an expansionary fiscal and monetary stance that has pushed government bond yields to multi‑decade highs and sent the yen to a four‑decade low. In June the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1 %, a 31‑year high, while core inflation stayed near the 2 % target.
Market pressure and opposition within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party have delayed a decision on cutting the 8 % levy on food sales that was promised to ease the cost‑of‑living burden. News agencies reported that Takaichi may reshuffle her cabinet in August or September, a move seen as a signal on the direction of her reflation policies.
