Japan's private elderly care market grows to support solo seniors

As the number of elderly people living alone in Japan is projected to rise significantly, there is a growing demand for private services that supplement the national long-term care insurance system. While public insurance covers essential care, it often excludes specific requests such as weeding gardens, pet care, or assisting with smartphone use and television recordings.

The market for these private services is expanding rapidly. According to estimates from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the market size is expected to grow from 6.4 trillion yen in 2020 to 16.9 trillion yen by 2050. This shift is driven by the increasing number of single-person elderly households, which are expected to reach 10.84 million by 2050.

To address challenges regarding service reliability and pricing transparency, the Care Related Service Business Association was established. The association has introduced a certification system to help users identify trustworthy providers. Meanwhile, some local municipalities are also collaborating with private businesses to provide specialized support, such as laundry services or grocery deliveries, to help seniors maintain their independence at home.
