Japan's ruling LDP postpones parliamentary seat‑reduction bill

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has informed opposition parties that it will not pursue the bill to reduce the number of seats in the House of Representatives during the current Diet session. Instead, the governing coalition seeks the opposition's support for related legislation, including an amendment to the Imperial Household Law and a law establishing a "secondary capital" region, before the session ends.

Prime Minister Takashi Kiyoshi and Japan Innovation Party leader Yoshimura confirmed that the seat‑reduction bill will be reconsidered in a special autumn session, while the opposition continues to demand the withdrawal of the secondary‑capital proposal. The parties are negotiating to reach an agreement on the remaining bills.

The move reflects ongoing negotiations between the ruling bloc and opposition over the legislative agenda ahead of the upcoming special session.
