Japan's Summer 2026 Travel Trend: Luxury Overseas Flights and Experience‑Focused Domestic Tours

Travel data from Hankyu Travel Co. shows that Japan's summer‑holiday bookings for 2026 remain robust despite rising prices. Overseas reservations are at 98 % of the previous year, with Europe retaining the largest share and strong growth in Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. Long‑haul trips to North America and Latin America see a notable shift toward premium cabins – roughly one in four travellers chooses business class – and high‑end hotels are in demand. Domestic bookings have risen 3 % to 103 % of the prior year, driven by experience‑oriented tours that centre on traditional summer festivals, major fireworks displays and attractions such as the Air Self‑Defense Force’s Blue Impulse shows.

At the same time, fuel‑surcharge spikes are inflating airline costs. Both JAL and ANA now levy up to ¥65,000 per leg, and on routes like Tokyo–Hawaii the surcharge can exceed the base fare, creating a “reverse‑price” effect. Travel expert Yuki Ōki advises passengers to seek carriers that waive the surcharge and to plan ahead to mitigate the combined impact of a weak yen, high overseas prices and soaring jet‑fuel costs.
