Japan's Supply Chain GHG Data Initiative Targets Scope 3 Emissions

Companies are increasingly required to measure and disclose Scope 3 greenhouse‑gas (GHG) emissions, which cover indirect emissions from supply‑chain activities such as raw‑material procurement, logistics, product use and disposal. Japanese standards such as the SSBJ climate‑related disclosure guidelines, the EU CSRD/ESRS, CDP and the SBTi Net‑Zero criteria all now expect detailed Scope 3 data, with the SSBJ framework beginning phased disclosures from the fiscal year ending March 2027.

To address the data‑collection challenges this creates, the Insetting Consortium – a group led by Norinchukin Bank and including food manufacturers, distributors and agricultural organisations – announced a partnership with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The consortium will develop a simple calculation tool to help firms gather primary supply‑chain data, facilitating more accurate GHG accounting and reduction planning across the sector.
