Japan's Takaichi and Ueno address nursing care and social security reforms

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and reappointed Health, Labour and Welfare Minister Kenichiro Ueno have addressed the critical state of the nation's nursing care and social security systems.

During a Diet session, Prime Minister Takaichi expressed a “strong sense of crisis” regarding the nursing care sector, noting that facilities are facing severe challenges due to labor shortages and rising prices. She emphasized that preventing the working generation from leaving their jobs to provide care is essential for economic growth. Takaichi stated that upcoming compensation revisions will appropriately reflect increases in wages and prices to ensure treatment comparable to other professions.

Minister Ueno, following his reappointment in the Takaichi Cabinet, outlined goals for his second term, including the construction of a social security system for all generations and the promotion of “proactive preventive medicine.” Regarding nursing care and disability welfare services, Ueno noted that support for providers is urgent. He indicated that the 2027 compensation revisions will focus on wage increases, management stability, and talent retention. Additionally, the government plans to review medical expense burdens for the elderly and the criteria for the 20% co-payment in nursing care insurance.
