Japan retires Type 74 main battle tank after nearly 50 years of service
The Type 74 main battle tank served in Japan's Ground Self‑Defense Force from 1975 until its retirement in March 2024, ending a service span of almost five decades. 873 vehicles were built between 1974 and 1989, replacing the older Type 61.
The tank featured a distinctive hydropneumatic suspension that could raise, lower, and tilt the hull sideways, allowing it to adapt to steep slopes and rugged terrain. It weighed about 38 tonnes, was powered by an air‑cooled 10‑cylinder diesel engine rated at 720 hp, and could reach 53 km/h on road. A crew of four operated a 105 mm rifled main gun supplied by Japan Steel Works, complemented by a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun and a 7.62 mm machine gun.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries produced the hull and turret, while Japan Steel Works manufactured the main gun. The Type 74’s unique design and long service life reflect Japan’s focus on mobility in mountainous terrain.
