Japan's unique railway switchback stations

Japan features rare railway switchback stations designed to navigate steep mountain gradients. Toge Station in Yamagata Prefecture was part of a four-station continuous switchback system used to overcome the steep Itaya Pass. This mechanism was phased out in 1990 following the introduction of the Yamagata Shinkansen and more powerful electric locomotives.

In Nagano Prefecture, Obasute Station on the JR Shinonoi Line remains an active example of a pass-through type switchback station. Located on a mountain slope, the station offers views of the Zenkoji Plain, which has been recognized as a Japanese Night View Heritage site. The station's unique layout allows trains to transition between tracks to manage the incline.
