Japan's wealthy class holds 469 trillion yen in net financial assets
Recent data from Nomura Research Institute (NRI) and Hakuhodo provide insights into the classification and characteristics of wealthy households in Japan.
According to NRI's 2023 estimates, the wealthy class is defined as households with net financial assets between 100 million and 500 million yen, while the ultra-wealthy hold 500 million yen or more. As of 2023, the combined number of wealthy and ultra-wealthy households reached approximately 1.65 million, possessing a total of 469 trillion yen in net financial assets.
Complementing this, Hakuhodo's 'New Wealthy Class Survey 2026' focuses on households with an annual income exceeding 30 million yen. The study identifies a 'double rich' segment, noting that approximately 60% of these high-income households also possess over 100 million yen in financial assets.
Key consumer trends among this group include a preference for experiential value over material ownership, a focus on personal growth, and a willingness to spend on health, wellness, and education. The survey also highlights generational nuances, such as younger wealthy individuals investing in luxury brands and cars, and senior wealthy individuals showing high adoption rates of generative AI tools.
