Japan's WWII legacy marked by Hiroshima remembrance and Okinawa Agent Orange dispute

Italy is preparing a series of events to mark the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, which killed tens of thousands instantly and eventually claimed over 140,000 lives. Ceremonies will be held in Rome, Verona, Rovereto, Palermo and other cities, featuring prayers, lantern releases, concerts and round‑table discussions organized by groups such as PeaceLink, Terra e Pace and the Community of Sant’Egidio.

Separately, activists and researchers continue to allege that the United States stored and buried large quantities of the toxic defoliant Agent Orange on the island of Okinawa during the Vietnam War era. Claims cite 25,000 barrels stored at Machinato in 1971, while the U.S. government and the Pentagon maintain that no such chemicals were ever present, denying medical assistance or compensation to affected veterans and local residents.
