JapanTaxFree and UPBOND to launch JPYC stablecoin tax refunds

JapanTaxFree and UPBOND have announced the launch of a new tax refund service for foreign travelers in Japan, scheduled to begin on November 1. The service allows visitors to receive their consumption tax refunds directly into digital wallets using JPYC, a yen-pegged stablecoin.

The initiative coincides with Japan's transition to a “refund-style” tax exemption system. Under this new model, travelers pay the tax-inclusive price at the point of sale and receive a refund after customs verifies the goods are being taken out of the country. This change aims to prevent the fraudulent resale of tax-free goods within Japan.

By utilizing the Avalanche C-Chain blockchain, the service aims to reduce the high fees and lack of transparency often associated with credit card refunds or international bank transfers. Because the transaction history is recorded on the blockchain, the companies state it will also help deter money laundering and fraudulent claims.

Travelers can hold the JPYC for future purchases in Japan or exchange it for foreign-denominated stablecoins like USDC. The system is designed to function without requiring retailers to handle sensitive personal information such as credit card numbers or bank account details.
