Japeri declares 180-day climate alert for extreme weather

The municipality of Japeri has declared a 180-day climate alert to prepare for potential extreme weather events during the 2026/2027 biennium. The preventive measure, enacted via Decree No. 3.810/2026, aims to strengthen the monitoring of meteorological, hydrological, and geological conditions.

A Municipal Crisis Management Cabinet, led by Mayor Fernanda Ontiveros, will coordinate integrated actions across municipal secretariats. The Municipal Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense (SEMPDEC) will oversee the continuous monitoring of alerts from specialized agencies such as CEMADEN and INMET.

Priority risks identified in the decree include heatwaves, low humidity, droughts, water supply impacts, wildfires, storms, intense rainfall, flooding, and mass movements. The administration may preemptively deploy teams, equipment, and resources to vulnerable areas, including maintaining drainage systems and preparing temporary shelters.
