Jaques Wagner scandal heightens election tension in Bahia

A Federal Police operation probing Senator Jaques Wagner’s alleged receipt of payments linked to Banco Master — and the broader “Master crisis” — has intensified political tensions ahead of the Bahia gubernatorial race. Wagner, who denies wrongdoing, is a key ally of incumbent Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), whose campaign has been buoyed by federal projects and President Lula’s popularity. The investigation has shaken the governing coalition, prompting the PT to launch a “Three Brothers” ad campaign emphasizing unity among Wagner, Rodrigues and former minister Rui Costa.

Governor Rodrigues defended the alliance, saying, “The group has always been united and we will overcome. Wagner stepped back, met with Lula to defend himself and our campaign.” Opposition figures have called for the issue to stay within the judicial realm, while the scandal’s political fallout remains uncertain as the election approaches.
