Santa Catarina wildlife rescues involve cougar and rare marmoset

Several wildlife rescue operations took place in Santa Catarina, Brazil. In Campos Novos, a cougar (onça-parda) was spotted in an urban area near a vacant lot. The presence of the animal triggered a 10-hour operation involving the Fire Department, Environmental Military Police, and veterinarians from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). After moving through several residential backyards, the cougar was successfully sedated with tranquilizer darts and relocated to the Rio Canoas State Park, a protected conservation unit.

In Jaraguá do Sul, a rare leucistic marmoset was rescued after being found with suspected injuries from being hit by a vehicle. The animal, which possesses a rare genetic condition resulting in nearly white fur, is not native to the southern region of Brazil. Following medical evaluation, it is expected to be transferred to a wildlife screening center in Florianópolis for proper placement.

Authorities have reminded residents to maintain distance from wild animals and avoid feeding them to prevent unpredictable behavior and health risks.
