Jari-Matti Latvala faces trial for aggravated tax fraud
The tax fraud trial of Toyota rally team principal Jari-Matti Latvala has commenced in the Helsinki District Court. The prosecution is seeking a minimum of three years of unconditional imprisonment for aggravated tax fraud.
The dispute centers on Latvala's tax residency between 2014 and 2017. While Latvala officially listed Monaco as his residence, the Finnish Tax Administration contends he spent significantly more time in Finland than permitted for a person with limited tax liability. Prosecutors argue he systematically avoided taxes by failing to report his actual location, while the defense maintains his professional life and primary residence were based abroad.
Evidence presented includes details of a 27-square-meter rental apartment in Monaco, for which Latvala reportedly paid over 360,000 euros in rent. The defense argues this was his true home, whereas the prosecution claims he had minimal personal or economic ties to Monaco. Although Latvala previously paid 4.5 million euros in back taxes, the criminal proceedings continue. The legal battle is also impacting Latvala's racing career, as the court dates prevent him from competing in certain European Rally Championship asphalt events.
