Jari-Matti Latvala faces trial for alleged tax fraud
Jari-Matti Latvala, the Toyota GAZOO Racing WRT team principal and former WRC driver, is facing trial at the Helsinki District Court regarding allegations of aggravated tax fraud. The prosecution alleges that between 2014 and 2017, Latvala falsely claimed tax residency in Monaco to avoid Finnish taxes, despite spending significant time in Finland and purchasing a home there in 2016.
Latvala has already paid approximately 4.5 million euros in back taxes. However, the legal proceedings continue as the court must determine if his actions constituted a criminal offense. The prosecutor is seeking a minimum of three years of unconditional imprisonment.
Latvala maintains his innocence, stating that his move to Monaco was for reasons other than tax avoidance and that he acted in accordance with the tax interpretations of the time. He has expressed that the commencement of the trial brings a sense of relief as he seeks to resolve the eight-year dispute.
