Warsaw Smoleńsk commemoration marked by protests and political tension

Various local and national commemorative events took place across Poland. In Warsaw, the monthly commemoration of the 2010 Smoleńsk air disaster was marked by tension. Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice party, delivered a speech asserting that the crash was an assassination and a crime by Vladimir Putin. His remarks were met with shouts of “liar” from protesters. Kaczyński criticized the police for failing to isolate those disrupting the religious ceremony and promised that new arguments regarding the tragedy would soon be presented to the public.

Other regional observances included a ceremony in Krasnystaw for Reserve Soldier Day, featuring military parades and decorations for local officials. In Szczuczki, residents gathered to remember over 100 victims of a 1939 massacre committed by German Wehrmacht forces. In Międzyzdroje, the 10th anniversary of the Kresy AK Soldier Monument was honored with historical reenactments. Additionally, Sandomierz held religious festivities for its patron, Blessed Wincenty Kadłubek, and a historical reenactment event titled “Living Windows and Images of History” involving local youth.
