Jarosław Kaczyński claims Ukraine sought to draw Poland into war

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party, has claimed that during the early months of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv attempted to draw Poland into the conflict. Speaking at a youth congress in Augustów, Kaczyński alleged that Ukrainian officials initially pursued a strategy that could have included the creation of a ‘single state’ between Poland and Ukraine to facilitate Poland's entry into the war.

Kaczyński noted that while relations have since evolved, he believes Ukrainian leadership initially miscalculated Poland's military capabilities, suggesting they thought Poland could provide more direct combat support than it actually possessed at the time. He cited President Volodymyr Zelensky's March 2022 speech to the Polish Sejm as evidence of this direction, noting Zelensky's comments regarding the lack of physical and historical borders between the two nations.

Critics and commentators have pointed out that Kaczyński did not provide specific documentation or names to support the claim of a formal plan for a unified state. Some have also contrasted these remarks with Kaczyński's own actions in March 2022, when he traveled to Kyiv to advocate for Western support and discussed the possibility of a NATO peacekeeping mission.
