Kaczyński proposes EU reform via potential exit negotiations
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party, has sparked intense political debate by suggesting that Poland could initiate negotiations regarding the conditions for leaving the European Union. Speaking at the Krynica Forum 2026, Kaczyński argued that the EU requires fundamental reforms to become more democratic and less bureaucratic. He proposed several methods to achieve this, including influencing public opinion and creating a new treaty with a deferred activation date among willing member states.
Kaczyński described the possibility of using Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to begin exit negotiations as a “hard and risky method,” but stated it might be necessary if other reform efforts fail. This stance has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling coalition. Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized the remarks as a “hard fight” for Poland’s future within the EU, while Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski accused PiS of never being mentally committed to European integration.
Other political figures have also reacted. Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, now leading the Rozwój Plus club, announced that he will not include individuals who support leaving the EU on his party’s electoral lists, calling Polexit a “capitulation” that would weaken Poland. Additionally, Deputy Foreign Minister Ignacy Niemczycki warned that such discussions undermine Poland’s diplomatic standing and international position.
