Jarosław Szymczyk appears in court for grenade launcher explosion trial
The trial of former Polish Police Chief Jarosław Szymczyk has commenced at the Warsaw-Mokotów District Court. The proceedings are being held behind closed doors following several delays.
Szymczyk faces charges related to an explosion involving an RGW-90 recoilless anti-tank grenade launcher that occurred at the Police Headquarters on December 14, 2022. Prosecutors allege that Szymczyk possessed the weapon without a required license and failed to declare it to Customs and Tax Service officials when transporting it from Ukraine through the Dorohusk border crossing.
He is further accused of unintentionally endangering the lives and health of many people at the headquarters and causing significant property damage. An expert report from the Military Technical Institute of Armament confirmed the grenade launcher was fully functional and intended for military use, with no documentation indicating it had been rendered inoperable.
Prosecutor Aleksandra Piasta-Pokrzywa confirmed that the indictment has been read and indicated that the next hearing is expected to take place in December.
