Jarosław Łukomski sues company over AI voice cloning

A landmark legal case in Poland regarding the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence to clone a human voice has reached a significant milestone. Jarosław Łukomski, a prominent Polish voice actor known for his work on major films such as ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, is suing a water and sewage company for allegedly using an AI-generated version of his voice in an advertisement without his consent.

During the fourth hearing held on August 21 at the Warsaw District Court, an expert witness confirmed a crucial fact: the voice used in the commercial was indeed a clone of Łukomski’s voice. This marks the first trial in Poland concerning the use of AI to replicate a voice actor’s identity without permission.

Although the hearing was expected to be the final one, the proceedings have been delayed until November because a key witness was unable to attend due to health reasons. Łukomski has emphasized the importance of this case, stating that without a legal precedent, the livelihoods of many professionals remain at risk. He has called for systemic solutions and better filtering or labeling of AI-generated content to protect creators.
