Jaroslav Seifert: 125th anniversary and new documentary announced

The Czech Republic marks the upcoming 125th anniversary of the birth of renowned poet Jaroslav Seifert. To commemorate the occasion, a new documentary titled ‘Jaroslav Seifert v rytmu bezčasí’ (Jaroslav Seifert in the Rhythm of Timelessness) has been announced. Directed by Pavel Štingl and produced by Pilot Film, the film is the first feature-length distribution project dedicated to the poet and is scheduled for release in Czech cinemas on January 7, 2027.

The documentary aims to present Seifert not merely as a literary classic, but as a figure whose use of rhythm and imagery resonates with modern sensibilities. The film traces his life through the major shifts of 20th-century Czech history, including the interwar avant-garde movement, the Nazi occupation, and the subsequent communist regime. It explores his relationship with the state, noting that he was monitored by the State Security (StB) from the 1950s and faced increased scrutiny following the signing of Charter 77.

Seifert is remembered for his deep connection to Prague and his role in the literary community. He was a key figure in moments of political liberalization, such as the second congress of Czechoslovak writers, where he advocated for silenced and imprisoned authors. His legacy continues to be honored through local commemorations and cultural events in Prague.
