Jasenje mountain chapel celebrates 100th anniversary

A celebratory mass was held to mark the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Mary of the Snow chapel on Jasenje mountain. The ceremony, led by retired Bishop Andrej Glavan, was attended by over 300 hikers and religious practitioners.

The chapel and a nearby mountain hut were established in the 1920s by theology students from Ljubljana seeking a place for spiritual reflection in nature. While the hut was destroyed by German forces during World War II, the chapel remained intact. Following the war, the site was expanded with the assistance of writer and priest Fran Saleški Finžgar.

Historical records highlight the site's significance, including a 1954 pearl mass celebrated by Finžgar, which was presided over by then-Ljubljana Bishop Anton Vovk. To commemorate the centenary, Dr. Janez Gril, the chapel's custodian, released a booklet documenting the history of the site.
