Seventeen‑year‑old Jasmine Pernot of Thurso, Quebec, will serve as the youngest skipper entered in the inaugural St‑Laurent 400 offshore race and one of only three women skippers. The 400‑nautical‑mile event starts on 6 August from Tadoussac on the Saguenay River’s mouth and finishes in the Magdalen Islands, with crews expected to spend more than 24 consecutive hours at sea.

Pernot will lead a crew of seven, all women except for male second‑in‑command and tactician Daniel Bérubé. She discovered sailing through the Femina Jeunesse program, which offers free training to girls aged 15‑17, and hopes the race will challenge gender stereotypes in the sport.

The race, promoted as a new format for Quebec sailing, has attracted attention for its emphasis on endurance and inclusivity, with Pernot stating, “We’re used to spending a day on the water and then coming back to the marina at night. This time, we’ll be racing for more than 24 hours straight.”
