Jasna Góra: The history of Our Lady of Częstochowa's feast day
The history of the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa is rooted in the efforts of Blessed Honorat Koźmiński, a Capuchin who sought to establish a dedicated liturgical day for the icon at Jasna Góra. During a period when Poland was divided by partitions, Koźmiński prepared the necessary Mass forms and breviary offices to advocate for the feast.
To avoid interference from Tsarist authorities, documents and a letter from Bishop Stanisław Zdzitowiecki were sent secretly to Rome. This effort was successful; Pope Pius X approved the feast of Our Lady of Jasna Góra in 1904. The first official celebration took place at the sanctuary on August 29, 1906.
The establishment of the feast served as a significant moment of national unity. In August 1906, hundreds of pilgrimage groups traveled to Jasna Góra, with reports indicating that approximately half a million people gathered at the site.
