Jason Calacanis labels memecoins a ‘giant scam’
Technology investor Jason Calacanis has labeled memecoins a ‘giant scam,’ sparking renewed debate regarding the intrinsic value of tokens that lack fundamental utility. Calacanis noted that these assets typically lack products, revenue streams, or underlying use cases, relying instead on viral narratives and social media attention to drive prices.
In addition to his criticism, Calacanis issued a warning to his followers regarding impersonation. He clarified that he has no involvement with any memecoin projects and will never privately ask followers to buy, sell, or trade financial assets. He stated that if any funds from such projects were successfully sent to his accounts, he would donate them to a ‘good cause.’
While distancing himself from memecoins, Calacanis identified Bitcoin and Bittensor (TAO) as the two cryptocurrency assets he occasionally discusses publicly. Current market data indicates that meme tokens hold a combined market capitalization of approximately $35.9 billion.
