Jason Kenney links UCP byelection loss to Alberta separation vote

Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has linked the United Conservative Party’s (UCP) recent byelection loss in the Calgary-Shaw riding to the upcoming provincial referendum on Alberta's separation from Canada.

Kenney stated that the New Democratic Party’s (NDP) victory in this conservative stronghold suggests that the debate over secession is alienating patriotic conservative voters. He warned that a vote to initiate the separation process could inadvertently benefit the NDP in future provincial elections and the Liberal Party of Canada in federal contests.

Conservative strategist Ken Boessenkool also commented on the result, describing the loss as a rebuke against the referendum, which he characterized as a distraction from more pressing issues facing Albertans.
