Jason Kenney suggests using oil exports in U.S. tariff dispute

Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has suggested that Canada should consider using oil and gas exports as leverage in the ongoing tariff dispute with the United States. Kenney argued that by excluding energy from potential reprisals, Canada is weakening its negotiating position. He proposed that signaling the possibility of export taxes on fuel and potash could serve as a deterrent, noting that such measures would impact American consumers and farmers ahead of mid-term elections.

This stance contrasts with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who has maintained that oil and gas should remain excluded from the trade conflict. Smith argued that cutting off energy exports would harm Canadian interests and reduce the revenue available to support other sectors affected by U.S. tariffs. She urged the federal government to return to negotiations to avoid further escalation.

The debate occurs as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government implements counter-tariffs in response to U.S. import fees on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.
