Jasprit Bumrah injury sparks concerns over Indian team workload management

Concerns regarding injury management and workload within the Indian cricket team have intensified following recent setbacks involving several key players. Jasprit Bumrah is currently sidelined with knee swelling sustained during an ODI series against England. While Bumrah was initially considered for the Test series against Sri Lanka, management opted for a cautious approach to preserve his fitness for future assignments. Auqib Nabi has been named as his replacement for the squad.

Bumrah is among a growing list of absentees, including Sai Sudharsan (toe injury), Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy (hamstring issues), and Washington Sundar (quadriceps injury). Former cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has questioned whether the team management and selectors are properly managing player workloads, noting that while the Centre of Excellence provides physical assessments, the final decision to play rests with the captain, coach, and selectors.

Reports suggest that due to his injury history, Bumrah may face challenges maintaining his availability for longer formats of the game following the 2027 ODI World Cup. Consequently, the team management is reportedly working to develop a deeper pace bowling pool, featuring players such as Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, to prepare for a future without the veteran pacer in Test cricket.
