Jaume Giró resigns from Junts, citing party's direction
Former Catalan government minister of Economy and Finance Jaume Giró announced he is leaving the Junts party, saying his political convictions no longer align with the party's current course. Giró, who served as Junts deputy until September 2025 and as minister from May 2021 to October 2022, said the disagreement that prompted his parliamentary resignation last year has become stronger over the past twelve months. He emphasized continued respect for former colleagues and gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
Giró, a journalist and business graduate, previously held senior roles at Gas Natural, La Caixa, Repsol and the Fundación La Caixa. He opposed the relocation of La Caixa’s headquarters to Alicante and was appointed minister by Carles Puigdemont and Jordi Sánchez. He criticised Junts’ decision to exit the coalition government with ERC and rejected offers to lead electoral lists for Junts or the Aliança Catalana. His departure marks a notable split within the Catalan nationalist party.
