Javier Aguirre defends Mexico's tactics after World Cup 2026 loss to England

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre explained that the team’s heavy use of crosses in the Round of 16 against England was a deliberate tactical choice, not improvisation. He said the diagonally‑aimed, low‑to‑mid‑height deliveries produced both of Mexico’s key chances – Raúl Jiménez’s header and Julián Quiñones’s goal – and were intended to disrupt a defense playing with one fewer man.

Aguirre also noted that the side tried long‑range shots to pull England’s back line out of position and emphasized that he never reprimanded 17‑year‑old Gilberto Mora for the error that led to the English equaliser. Instead, he expressed pride in the youngster’s effort and urged him to continue playing with confidence.
