Javier García Martínez elected to International Science Council governing body

Javier García Martínez, a professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Alicante, has been elected to the Governing Body of the International Science Council (ISC). He is the first Spaniard to join this leadership group, which consists of ten scientists from around the world.

The ISC is a major international scientific organization representing 250 scientific organizations, including national academies and research councils. The governing body is responsible for setting the organization’s scientific and institutional strategy and overseeing its mission to promote science as a global public good.

García Martínez emphasized the necessity of international cooperation in an era of scientific polarization and fragmentation. He also noted the need for coordinated global responses to emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, gene editing, and synthetic biology.
