Javier Hernández discusses the intense pressure of professional football
Mexican footballer Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández has spoken out about the intense psychological and physical pressures inherent in professional soccer. Speaking via social media, the Atlético Dallas striker described the profession as a constant ‘pressure cooker’ where a player's human value can feel reduced to their performance during a ninety-minute match.
Hernández highlighted the extreme scrutiny faced by athletes, noting that a single two-second error can trigger millions of insults on social media and national television. He also addressed the loss of personal autonomy, stating, ‘Your body does not belong to you, it belongs to the club that pays you.’
Furthermore, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United player detailed the ‘draconian’ restrictions imposed by club insurers to protect multimillion-dollar physical investments. These contractual obligations often prohibit common activities such as riding motorcycles, skiing, mountain biking, surfing, or horseback riding to ensure the player's physical availability.
