Javier Lanari's Banco Nación Directorship Faces Union Criticism

Argentina's President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo signed Decree 618/2026 appointing journalist and former communications secretary Javier Lanari as director of the state‑owned Banco Nación, a term that runs until 4 February 2028. Arturo Quiñoa, secretary‑general of the banking union APJBO, denounced the choice, arguing Lanari lacks the technical expertise required to guide the bank's financial policy. Quiñoa described the appointment as a “consolation prize” after Lanari’s exit from the communications ministry and compared it to naming a psychologist as a newspaper director. He also noted that a Banco Nación director earns roughly 6.13 million Argentine pesos per month.
