Javier Lázaro Hernando apologizes during murder trial in Burgos

Javier Lázaro Hernando appeared before the Audiencia Provincial de Burgos for the final session of his trial regarding the death of his father-in-law, Valentín López Saiz. During his final statement, Lázaro Hernando apologized to the family, stating, “I ask forgiveness from the family. I recognize the facts although I remember nothing.”

The defendant faces more than 30 years in prison for the stabbing that occurred on October 3, 2024, in Aranda de Duero. His defense attorney argued that the incident was a “mechanical act” resulting from a psychotic episode, suggesting the defendant was not fully aware of his actions at the time. The defense requested that he be judged for homicide and minor theft rather than more severe charges, characterizing the event as an unpredictable mental health crisis.

The jury is scheduled to begin deliberations on Monday following the delivery of the verdict object by Magistrate María Dolores Fresco.
