Javier Milei calls taxes ‘a robbery’ during Washington speech
Argentine President Javier Milei described taxes as ‘a robbery’ during a speech to business leaders and investors in Washington, D.C. While receiving the ‘Global Champion of Free Enterprise’ award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Milei advocated for lower taxation, deregulation, and increased economic openness to stimulate investment.
Milei stated that his administration has reduced the tax burden by an amount equivalent to four percentage points of Argentina's GDP in just over two years, all while maintaining fiscal balance. He emphasized that reducing taxes returns money to the ‘true creators of wealth’ and argued that such measures must be paired with budgetary discipline and controlled monetary issuance.
To combat inflation and reduce country risk, Milei highlighted that his government eliminated a consolidated fiscal deficit equivalent to 15 percent of GDP between the Treasury and the Central Bank. His broader economic strategy aims to transform Argentina into one of the world's most open economies by leveraging its energy, mining, and agricultural resources.
