Javier Milei cites Nobel economic theories in fiscal policy

Argentine President Javier Milei has discussed the application of economic theories developed by recent Nobel Prize winners Michael Woodford and Robert Hall. Milei stated that Woodford’s work on monetary theory and decision-making mechanisms has been instrumental to his administration's efforts to achieve fiscal equilibrium, clean the Central Bank's balance sheet, and reduce long-term inflation.

Milei characterized the laureates as neokeynesians who incorporate microeconomic constraints into their analysis, distinguishing them from classical Keynesians. He noted that his government utilized specific mechanisms from Woodford’s work to manage fiscal numbers and prepare for the removal of currency controls.

Additionally, Milei has appeared on the prediction market Polymarket regarding the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics, holding an implicit probability of approximately 1%. This follows the publication of an academic paper titled ‘Minimum Viable Scale: Extinction and Escape under Increasing Returns’, co-authored by Milei and former advisor Demian Reidel, which explores mathematical models for economic growth and increasing returns.
