Argentina: Controversy erupts over Milei's claim of 30,000 terrorist deportations

Argentine President Javier Milei has sparked political controversy and legal action following claims that his administration deported 10,000 terrorists in 2025 and 20,000 in 2026. Milei stated these individuals were infiltrating the country to “dinamitar el modelo argentino” (dynamite the Argentine model).

Official records from the Ministry of Security and the National Directorate of Migration do not support these figures. For 2026, the Ministry reported 744 expulsions and 18,947 entry incidents related to administrative or legal issues, such as improper documentation, but no cases were categorized as terrorism. In 2025, records showed 772 expulsions, primarily for drug-related or property crimes.

The discrepancy has led to several developments. Deputy Maximiliano Ferraro has requested formal reports from security and migration authorities to clarify the numbers. Additionally, lawyer Valeria Carreras filed a judicial complaint against Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva and former minister Patricia Bullrich, alleging potential breach of official duties and omission of reporting.

Opposition figures, including Deputy Florencia Carignano, have criticized the President's statements, suggesting the claims may be an attempt to divert public attention from the country's economic situation.
