Formosa court sentences four journalists, sparking Milei-Bullrich divide
A court in Las Lomitas, Formosa, has sentenced four journalists from the LN+ team to five days of arrest or a fine of 282,550 pesos each. The ruling, issued by Judge Omar Padilla, cited violations of Article 73 of the Formosa Misdemeanor Code, specifically regarding conducting activities without prior authorization and lacking professional credentials during a documentary coverage titled ‘Hambre de Futuro’ in the San José indigenous community.
The decision has sparked a sharp political divide within the ruling La Libertad Avanza party. President Javier Milei publicly celebrated the ruling on social media, describing the journalists as ‘filthy trash with microphones’ and accusing them of serving corrupt political interests.
In contrast, Senator Patricia Bullrich distanced herself from the President, condemning the ruling and criticizing Formosa Governor Gildo Insfrán. Bullrich asserted that ‘press freedom must be respected’ and questioned the democratic implications of requiring permission to speak with citizens. Journalism organizations, including ADEPA and FOPEA, have also rejected the sentence, noting that Argentina does not require state licenses or professional registration to practice journalism.
