Argentina intensifies Malvinas sovereignty push via new laws and sanctions
Argentine President Javier Milei has defended a renewed diplomatic and economic offensive regarding sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, rejecting claims that the move is an electoral strategy. Milei stated that the decision to escalate the issue was accelerated by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential review of Washington's historical position on the islands.
The Argentine government is finalizing a 'National Sovereignty Law' to be submitted to Congress. This legislation aims to increase sanctions against companies and executives involved in hydrocarbon, fishing, or mining activities in the archipelago without Argentine authorization. The bill also seeks to grant the Executive more autonomy to identify aerial threats and includes provisions to facilitate the downing of aircraft perceived as threats.
In a separate legal development, a federal judge in Río Grande, Mariel Borruto, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Sea Lion oil project led by Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum. The court ruled that the consortium failed to present a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment. The injunction prohibits any further drilling, infrastructure installation, or exploitation activities in the area until compliance is met.
Additionally, the Argentine Navy confirmed that U.S. Marines are currently in Ushuaia for cold-weather expert exchange exercises, a deployment that has drawn scrutiny regarding its legal authorization under the National Constitution.
