Javier Milei concludes U.S. visit with antisemitism pledge and trade talks

Argentine President Javier Milei has concluded a 36-hour visit to Washington, D.C., where he received the 'World Champion of Free Enterprise' award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. During his stay, Milei participated in an event hosted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), where he pledged a 'zero-tolerance' policy against antisemitism, stating that Argentina will not remain indifferent to threats against the Jewish community.

Diplomatically, Milei held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The leaders discussed strengthening the strategic alliance between Argentina and the United States, focusing on expanding bilateral trade, promoting transparent investment, and enhancing regional security. This follows the announcement that U.S. officials Christopher Landau and Juan Pablo Segura are scheduled to visit Argentina and Paraguay between October 19 and 26 to further these economic and security goals.

Economically, the visit occurred amid volatility in Argentine markets. Despite Milei's assertions that the country's risk index is steadily declining and his prediction that it will fall below 100 points by 2027, the JP Morgan country risk index rose to 648 basis points. Local stocks and sovereign bonds also saw declines. To support reserves, the Central Bank of Argentina purchased 68 million USD in the cash market.
